The principles described here are intended to ensure that my practice reflects the same standards of integrity, transparency and thoughtful decision-making that I encourage in the organisations I support.

Independence

I believe independent judgement leads to better decisions. My role is to provide independent thinking, constructive challenge and trusted advice that helps clients navigate complexity and make well-informed decisions.

I value evidence-informed thinking, professional integrity and constructive challenge. Every engagement is approached objectively, with respect for differing perspectives and an understanding that effective governance depends upon trust, openness and good judgement.

Professional Appointments

Throughout my career I have held executive, board, advisory and voluntary appointments across professional bodies, charities and public organisations.

These appointments provide valuable insight into governance, leadership and organisational complexity. Each appointment is undertaken independently, with appropriate regard to confidentiality, statutory responsibilities and professional obligations.

Where an appointment is relevant to a client engagement, it will be declared openly before work begins.

Professional Standards

My professional practice is informed by the standards and codes of conduct of the professional bodies of which I am a member. As a Chartered Member of both the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), I am committed to maintaining professional competence through Continuing Professional Development (CPD), acting ethically, maintaining professional competence and exercising independent professional judgement.

I undertake work only where I believe I can add genuine value. If a client would be better served by another specialist, I will say so and, where appropriate, recommend alternative expertise.

Confidentiality

Trust depends upon confidentiality.

Clients can be confident that discussions remain confidential unless disclosure is required by law or agreed in advance.

My experience across executive leadership, governance and advisory roles informs my thinking, but I do not disclose confidential information, privileged discussions or commercially sensitive material from current or previous appointments.

The insights I share are drawn from recurring organisational patterns, systems thinking and professional experience rather than the disclosure of individual organisational experiences.

Managing Potential Conflicts

Potential conflicts may arise through governance appointments, advisory roles, professional relationships or previous engagements.

Where appropriate, I will explain how any potential or perceived conflicts are being managed.

Before accepting any engagement, I consider whether there are circumstances that could affect, or reasonably be perceived to affect, my independence or impartiality.

Where a potential conflict exists, I will discuss it openly with the client before work begins. If a conflict cannot be managed appropriately, I will decline the engagement.

Maintaining trust is always more important than accepting a commission.

Public Service & Statutory Appointments

Certain appointments carry statutory, fiduciary or public responsibilities. Public appointments are undertaken independently of The Choice Chain. Where appropriate, relevant appointments will be declared and any actual, potential or perceived conflicts discussed before work is accepted.

Such appointments are undertaken separately from my independent advisory practice and are subject to their own governance arrangements and responsibilities.

Evidence & Emerging Thinking

The Choice Chain builds upon recognised governance, Environmental Health, safety, wellbeing and sustainability frameworks with practical leadership experience.

Where I present emerging ideas or original thinking, I distinguish these from established evidence and encourage constructive discussion and challenge.

AI Usage Principles

Artificial intelligence is a valuable thinking partner, not a substitute for professional judgement.

I use artificial intelligence responsibly as a thinking partner to support research, explore ideas, challenge assumptions and improve clarity.

Where AI is used, I exercise professional judgement to protect confidential and sensitive information and to ensure all outputs are critically reviewed before being relied upon or shared. Responsibility for all published work and client advice remains mine.

Where confidential or sensitive information is discussed, I exercise professional judgement and take appropriate steps to protect client confidentiality and comply with applicable professional and legal obligations.

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, articles, presentations, podcasts and speaking engagements reflect my personal views and professional experience.
